Sword of the Samurai (Fighting Fantasy Gamebook, No 20)
Published in Paperback by Dell Pub Co (March, 1987)
Average review score:

A great adventure bookThis book is a great example of the "Choose Your Own Adventure"-type books, although it is definitely targeted to a more mature reader. The illustrations are lavish and full, and the storyline is very engrossing. I spent countless hours with this book when I was younger, and it is a shame the series is no longer in print.

Sydney's first four years : being a reprint of A Narrative of the expedition to Botany Bay and A Complete account of the settlement at Port Jackson
Published in Unknown Binding by Library of Australian History : Published in association with the Royal Australian Historical Society ()
Average review score:

An eyewitness account of the settlement in SydneyI was impressed with Tim Flannerys editing of Watkin Tenches journals of the first days and months in Sydney Australia. Tench an officer in the Marines is a keen observer of his men the other officers and their interaction with the Aboriginals around Sydney Cove. What impressed me was his description of events such as exploring the country on the Cumberland plain and his encounters with the Aboriginals.

Systems Approaches to Management
Published in Hardcover by Plenum Pub Corp (October, 2000)
Average review score:

Quite a remarkable bookThis is a remarkable book. Inspite of a rather stodgy title, Jackson traces the various origins of systems thinking to their sociological foundations and implications. Extensive attention is given to systems approaches outside of the normal functionalist approaches ususally found in the US. I was at first intrigued and then delighted with his examination of critical thought and post-modernist approaches to systems approaches. Implications of Foucault and Kant for organizational theory are explored. Extensive applications of Jurgen Habermas's thought are made. It does make many of the other material (e.g., Senge's Fifth Discipline) seem quite shallow indeed. It is a bit more rigorous than most of the 'organizational theory' shelf!
This book deserves a place in any organizational theory class. It is an excellant example of exploring the various foundations, competing meta-theories and implications of organizational and management approaches.

Temptations of a Superpower (The Joanna Jackson Goldman Memorial Lecture on American Civilization and goVernment)
Published in Hardcover by Harvard Univ Pr (April, 1995)
Average review score:

Outstanding bookI am Russian and have been in the US for 1 year. This is the first book I read that really explained to me unexplainable things in American foreign policy. Obviously a scholar, Mr. Steel nevertheless does beautiful work in explaining how things really work in practice without any open partisan agenda or moralistic drivel. Thoughtful and balanced book, worth reading particularly for foreigners who would like a better understanding of how American foreign policy works and what the forces behind it are.

Texas Census Index 1880

Average review score:

Wonderful indexThis index is so much easier to use than the 1880 soundex. Included in this book are all households in the 1880 census.....even households without children under 10. They have been concise and their efforts to effectively index the 1880 Texas census are superb!

They Called Them Angels: American Military Nurses of World War II
Published in Hardcover by Praeger Publishers (30 June, 2000)
Average review score:

They Called Them AngelsThis book besides being a historical document is easy to read and very accurate. Alot of time and research by the author has produced a book that can bring tears to your eyes as you relive WWII and the hardships and trials that generation had to endure. My sister was one of the army nurses in the book so it is an invaluable treasure to me,but feel anyone who is a nurse or a lay person would find it a "good read".

This Is Michael Jackson
Published in Library Binding by Lerner Publications Company (October, 1984)
Average review score:

This is another of Michael's most popular biographies.Every library probably has this as well. Again, i grew up onthis book. I checked it out at the library a lot. Most pictures youmight be familiar with. It has him posing with his llamas I think, Beat it picture a lot of stuff. Plus discography, did you all know that he was the backup on that song ("it always feels like somebody's watchin' me.") Yes it's him. I along with everyone in America said it wasn't him but it was and the book shows the proof. It's from Rockwell's song by the way. I don't remember the name. Made back in '84. If you're a huge Thriller era fan of MJ's like I am then you'll love this book. Plus early pictures of him as well!!!
